Flower Mound High wrestler makes podium at U17 World Championships

A wrestling star from Flower Mound continues to make a name for herself on the world stage.

Aisha Williams Bautista took home bronze at the U17 World Wrestling Championships hosted at the end of July and early August in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Flower Mound native represented her home country of Panama in the tournament and fought her way back to the bronze medal match after losing in the quarterfinals.

It was Bautista’s world tournament debut.

“Competing against the best wrestlers in the world takes more than talent—it takes courage, resilience and relentless determination,” said Texas USA Wrestling in a post to social media. “Aisha battled through a tough international field and earned every point on her way to the podium.”

Back home, Bautista will hope to lead the Lady Jags wrestling program back to the postseason, where she took home gold in her weight class last year as the team earned second place.

Bautista is part of a program FMHS wrestling head coach Tiffany Mangini said has been special with the synergy created on and off the field.

Second place is the best the Lady Jags have finished at the state tournament, and Bautista will look to be a major part in the team’s pursuit of first.
