Mitchell: Let 2024 be the year of prosperity for all

As a new year begins, we look ahead with the knowledge of all we have learned the years before, giving us yet another opportunity to apply lessons learned to the days and months ahead.

While not one to rely on resolutions, I do believe in all of us resolving to make lives better for all concerned. The County and others have done much these last few years to help those facing homelessness, hunger, and mental health challenges.

Yet I truly believe we can do more – together. Our non-profits are beginning to see more donations, volunteers, and other resources. And we have more companies ready to help serve our communities. Together, we can create lasting change that will help those among us who are less fortunate.

We are also on the road to improving our transportation infrastructure, beginning construction in several areas to create easier access, additional lanes, and more to ease traffic congestion, thanks to the $650 million road bond package approved by voters in November 2022 along with the shared dollars from our communities and the state.

With more than 1,037,000 residents and counting, Denton County is on the fast track of growth. And with that growth comes many challenges. Together, we can address those challenges and turn them into opportunities as we collectively organize our efforts to deal with housing, ensuring the wellbeing of our senior population, expanding our efforts for mental health resources, working to provide our food pantries with nutritious options, and more.

At the same time, we continue to work on attracting companies with higher paying jobs, diversifying our economy to withstand any challenges that might come, and preserving our natural resources for future generations.

All these components are necessary to create a well-rounded, long-lasting environment in which our future generations will flourish.

We are fortunate to live in such a prosperous region, but we must also realize that, to reach our goals, we need to ensure everyone joins us in these efforts.

Thank you for all you have done in 2023 and all you will do in 2024. May each of us enjoy a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!
