As the federal and state governments work to address and prevent veteran suicide, Denton County is also working to make a difference in this area.
Last week, Denton County Commissioners Court proclaimed June as Veteran Suicide and PTSD Awareness Month in the county.
“It is essential that our veterans, who sacrificed so much on our behalf, receive the assistance they need to enhance their well-being and their ability to live long and fulfilling lives,” the county said in a social media post.
The Military Veteran Peer Network of Denton County will host a day-long awareness training event on June 21 at the Next Steps Center, 1305 Hwy 121 in Lewisville. Doors open at 8 a.m. and the event will start at 9 a.m., and it will have panel discussions and presentations that will provide an in-depth look at the increasing frequency and cost of suicide, risk and protective factors for suicide, resources for families, evidence-based training that anyone can use to prevent suicide and more in-depth training for mental health providers.
