Denton County Reports Ninth Influenza-Associated Death
Denton County Public Health (DCPH) is reporting the ninth influenza-associated death, an adult in Denton County, for the 2017-2018 flu season.
The 2017-2018 flu season is not over yet. The flu continues to be a serious health threat, and as the number of influenza-associated deaths rises, DCPH continues to recommend preventive steps to protect the health of our communities:
- Get vaccinated. The best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu is to get an annual flu shot, and the flu vaccination is recommended for everyone six months and older.
- Remember that antiviral medications are a second-line defense against the flu. If you are experiencing fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, muscle aches and headaches, visit your doctor immediately, and take antivirals if prescribed. These remedies can help you recover quicker and can potentially prevent you from being hospitalized with flu complications.
- Take everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs. Cover your cough and
sneeze, avoid people experiencing flu symptoms, stay home when you feel sick, and wash your hands often. These steps will help prevent respiratory viruses, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus.

Lewisville Chamber Names Citizen of the Year
At the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce 55th Annual Awards Gala on February 16, Lewisville Police Chief Russ Kerbow was named Citizen of the Year.
Each year the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes its members for the outstanding work they do in their business and in the community with awards for Citizen of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
Kerbow’s career at the Lewisville Police Department started as a police officer from 1978 to 1983, then held the rank of sergeant from 1983 to 1991. Promoted to lieutenant in 1991, he served as patrol shift watch commander until 1997, and then commander of criminal investigations from 1997 to 2001. In 2001, he became captain, then was named Chief of Police in 2007.
Lewisville Police Chief Russell Kerbow recently announced his upcoming retirement in August 2018 after serving the community for nearly 40 years. Chief Kerbow is a long-time member of the Lewisville Noon Rotary Club and also serves on the DATCU Board of Directors.
I want to congratulate Chief Kerbow on this well-deserved honor, and commend him on his decades of service to Lewisville.

On February 8, 1896, 122 years ago, the cornerstone was laid for the Courthouse-on-the-Square in Denton, and it’s still visible today!

Highland Village Rotary “Taste of the Village” March 23
The Highland Village Rotary Club is hosting its first ever “Taste of the Village” on Thursday, March 23, from 6 – 9 p.m. at Briarwood Retreat Centre, 670 Copper Canyon Rd, Argyle, TX 76226.
The event is a gourmet food and drink tasting night featuring multiple food stations, two breweries, two wineries, two distilleries, plus a casino party and live music from Good Therapy. Tickets are $50 per person and sponsorship opportunities are still available.
Highland Village Rotary raises funds to benefit local non-profits, including Meals On Wheels, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Children’s Advocacy Center, Special Olympics, Fallen Officers Fund and many more.

Children’s Advocacy Center “Champions for Children” Gala March 24
The Children’s Advocacy Center “Champions for Children” Gala is Saturday, March 24, at Circle R Ranch at 7 p.m. This event has become one of the region’s most premier charity fundraisers and raises a huge portion of the money to help in the fight for healing and justice for the children in our community.
Since its inception, community leaders, local celebrities and up-and-coming regional chefs have joined forces through this event to fight child abuse in Denton County. Known for incredible decor and top-notch food, the formal event also features a silent auction and live auction, and appetizers and desserts by local celebrity chefs!

Cloud 9 Charities “Giving & Golf Tournament” April 2
Join Cloud 9 Charities for their 4th Annual Giving & Golf Tournament at Lantana Golf Club on Monday, April 2. Registration is at 8 a.m., and breakfast, lunch, snacks, beverages, contests and prizes are just part of the fun!
Cloud 9 Charities hosts fundraising and awareness events that address the needs of local families by providing funding to established nonprofits, which has included Grace Like Rain, Ally’s Wish, Special Abilities of North Texas, and Communities in Schools of North Texas, just to name a few.

Flower Mound Chamber 29th Annual Golf Tournament April 4
Golf season is just around the corner and there are lots of opportunities to play golf for a good cause. The Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 29th Annual Golf Tournament on Wednesday, April 4, at Bridlewood Golf Club.
Registration and the putting contest begins at 11 a.m. and the driving range opens at 11:30 a.m. After lunch and the putting contest, the shotgun start is at 1 p.m., and an awards dinner follows the afternoon of golf.
Women of Flower Mound Spring Fling Fashion Show April 14
On Saturday, April 14, the Women of Flower Mound are partnering with The Shops at Highland Village for their most popular FUNdraiser of the year! Stop by from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to see the latest women’s, men’s and children’s spring fashions provided by The Shops of Highland Village merchants.
In addition, attendees will sample menu items in our “Taste of the Shops” and enjoy a scrumptious dessert table. A Gift Basket fundraiser will give attendees the opportunity to take home beautifully themed gift baskets, as well. With more than 30 themed baskets, there’s something for everyone!

They also focus on providing for the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Denton County in accordance with the Texas Local Government Code, county policy and sound emergency management practices.
