Town of Flower Mound: Water service line is homeowners’ responsibility

Flower Mound Water Tower

The town of Flower Mound put out a news release Monday afternoon after receiving word from residents who have been pitched water service line warranty programs by companies, including American Water Resources of Texas.

The warranty programs are much like insurance, the news release said. For a fee, the company will cover certain qualified repairs for the service lines.

Service lines constitute a portion of the private plumbing system and are neither owned nor maintained by the town of Flower Mound, the news release said. The homeowner is responsible for maintenance and any repair of damage or failure in the service lines. Customer responsibility for water service lines begins at the customer side of the water meter, and, for sewer service lines, at the property line.

“The Town of Flower Mound does not endorse any of these companies because the service line is considered private plumbing,” the news release said. “Therefore, the Town recommends that residents, prior to considering a service line warranty program, conduct their own due diligence to learn what is and is not covered and what exceptions apply.”
