Guyer’s Darthard comes out big

DeRay Darthard

DeRay Darthard is making quite the splash for the Denton Guyer football team so far this season.

He had a punt return touchdown called back against Dallas Kimball in last week’s game along with numerous tackles and has been a disruptive force in the secondary for the Wildcats in his first three games.

But his strongest performance took place in Guyer’s season opener against Mansfield Lake Ridge, when he helped to seal the victory for his team.

Trailing 21-3 at one point in the contest, Guyer mounted a comeback and had a 30-21 lead late in the fourth quarter.

It was Lake Ridge’s ball with a chance to put the game to within one score, when Darthard jumped up and intercepted an Eagles’ pass, and returned it 36-yards for a Guyer touchdown.

Darthard said it was a great thrill for him to be a part of such a play.

“I couldn’t believe it was happening, and my adrenaline was pumping because I have always dreamt of returning a pick for a touchdown,” Darthard said. “It was such an amazing feeling.”

Darthard did not stop there, either, as the Guyer safety intercepted a second Lake Ridge pass to remove any chance of a possible comeback.

He was named “Defensive Player of the Week,” by the Dallas Morning News.

“I was very excited,” Darthard said. “It’s a huge honor to be recognized.”

While it may appear that the Guyer senior is all about football, Darthard said, in his spare time, he likes to pursue another serious passion of his–philosophy.

“I’ve always been intrigued by how people think and why they think the way they do,” Darthard said. “It started my freshman year when I saw a commercial that mentioned the philosophy behind the nature of knowledge, reality and wisdom. Since then I have enjoyed reading and learning about different ways of thinking and how to apply it daily in my life and everyday situations.”
