Atkinson named Marcus football coach

Kevin Atkinson

Kevin Atkinson is returning to Marcus High School as Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator.

He takes over a MHS program that won the 5A Division II state title in 1997 and reached the state championship game in 1995.

Atkinson, once an offensive assistant at Marcus, spent the past five seasons at Denton High School and has 25 seasons of coaching under his belt.

Before coming to Denton High, Atkinson spent the last decade as the Head Football Coach at Keller High School.  While at Keller Atkinson amassed the best record of any coach in Keller since the 1960’s.

Prior to his time at Keller, Atkinson was the Offensive Coordinator at Denton Ryan under Joey Florence.  Coming in with Florence, they took a program that had never won and went to the State Championship their first year there.

Prior to Denton Ryan, Atkinson was the Offensive Coordinator at Colleyville Heritage and an offensive assistant at Marcus from 1992 to 1995 where he was a part of another State Championship game.

Atkinson enjoys spending time with his wife, Christine, and three children, Lexi, Colt and Abbey.

Atkinson replaces Gerry Stanford, who left Marcus after three years in February to take the head coach position at Texarkana ISD’s Texas High School.
