Lewisville resident and small business owner Jake Collier filed last week to run for the Place 4 seat on the Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees, becoming the only challenger in the LISD election.
Places 3, 4 and 5 are up for election in May, and before Collier joined the Place 4 race, only the incumbents had filed: Angie Cox in Place 3, Katherine Sells in Place 4 and Jenny Proznik in Place 5.
Collier graduated from Holliday High School in 2011 and studied history and political science at Texas Tech University and South Plains College. He moved to Lewisville in 2016 to start his landscaping company, Collier Landscaping, according to a news release. He says he cares tremendously for the future of local children, and would like to see LISD make improvements to some of its programs and curriculum.
“Our district is strong enough to uphold a new yet continued direction for our own curriculum,” Collier said. “I believe that there are aspects of standardized testing that provides results and increases the amount of data to address very specific performance issues, but it lacks the depth of real world experience our students miss out on … We have the opportunity to implement programs and partnerships with some of the incredible companies that not only work with us for their profits, but also inspire our graduates to come and work for them.”
Collier has served in the student ministry at Valley Creek Church for three years, according to the news release.
“I’ve helped develop the same incredible group of 6th grade boys into 8th grade young men that have become capable of much more than leading within the walls of the church,” Collier said. “Although I have no children in the district, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity of parenting some of these students on a regular basis. I make massive investments in them because I care tremendously for their future as men and leaders in our community.”
As a Political Science major, Jake began working on the Kathaleen Wall Campaign for U.S. Congress in Houston during the Republican primaries last year. He was offered a job to work with the Phillip Huffines Campaign for State Senate. After the primaries ended, Jake helped manage the Tony Lawrence campaign for Flower Mound Town Council, and then served as a campaign coordinator for the Steve Dixon campaign for Mayor of Flower Mound. After Jake assisted Mayor Dixon in his win, Jake served with the Ted Cruz campaign and led a large group of 8th grade students to campaign for the Governor by block walking in Plano every weekend in the regular election.
A member of the District Leadership Team and regular attendee at board meetings, Collier has contributed to the issues facing the district by speaking up and seeking out other perspectives.
