Bach to Rock makes music learning groovy

Learning how to play or sing music doesn’t have to be boring or hard. It can and should be fun and entertaining like at the first Bach to Rock franchise in North Texas located in Flower Mound.

Flower Mound residents Beth and Brian Donovan opened their music education center for all ages in January next door to Ebby Halliday Realty in the Highlands Ranch shopping area.

Programs begin for children as young as age 1 with Rock N Roll, which introduces toddlers to music concepts. Rock City teaches preschoolers basic music theory concepts, and in Kids N Keys students ages 5-7 start learning piano technique and reading music. Program options expand dramatically at age 7 including Rock Band, Glee Club, private lessons and group classes.

“It’s engaging, keeps their interest and keeps them learning,” said Beth. “They may not even know they’re learning. We try to make music fun. That’s what separates us from all the other music lessons out there that focus on scales, scales, scales.”

“They get to pick the genre they like,” added Brian. “That’s why we’re called Bach to Rock. If you come in and want to play some classical, we’re going to teach you classical. We get them playing songs they like.”

Their location is led by director Mary Moon and features seven highly-trained instructors. One is Berklee College of Music graduate Todd Griffith, who doubles as the engineer of the facility’s complete, professional recording studio and production facility.

Bach to Rock focuses not just on individuals but also groups with bands that Brian likes to call their team sport. It doesn’t matter how well they play or sing, it’s more important they perform to build their self-esteem.

The Donovans, Moon, and the instructors are gearing up for full-day and half-day summer camps set to begin in June. Sessions will include Rock City World Tour (where ages 4-7 learn about and play all instruments), Rock Band (7 and up), Glee Club (vocals and choreography for ages 7 and up), and Recording Arts: Pro Tools and Production (10 and up).

Bach to Rock also features an online parent portal where families can track their students’ progress as they graduate from level to level. It’s all part of the unique way the folks at Bach to Rock educate their students about music.
