Jesse James Fit: Did You Know?

Jesse James Leyva

Life isn’t only about investing for retirement, but investing in yourself and your health. Unfortunately, too many people fail to realize this fact until it’s almost too late. They reach retirement, and suddenly decades of poor habits catch up with them. Or so they think.

Do you think weight gain, body aches and pains, and high blood pressure and cholesterol medicine are just part of getting older? That they suddenly appear in our 50s and 60s without reason? Think again.

As you move through your adult life, if you neglect to be intentional about staying active and making healthy food choices, slowly your health begins to fail you. By the time retirement comes around, you have poured years into working hard to have the financial means to enjoy it, but you may find yourself 30 to 80 pounds heavier with aches and pains, and little to no energy to do all of the things you’ve been saving and planning for, for all of these years.  As A.J. Reb Materi stated, “So many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health.”

Investing in your health in the retirement years is important physically and mentally. Poor physical fitness leads to muscle weakness and balance issues, increasing risk for falls and other injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.8 million older adults are treated for falls in emergency rooms every year. These falls are often the beginning of a downward spiral of poor health and quality of life, which can also lead to depression.

Falls aren’t the only concern. A lack of exercise and physical activity is also associated with an increased risk for dementia and metabolic syndrome, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more. So what is the key to preventing or reversing this downward spiral, so you can enjoy your golden years to the fullest? The answer is finding the right fitness home for you, one that is focused on your goals and is a positive, encouraging influence as you work to reach those goals.

For three consecutive years, Jesse James Fit has been voted by the community as the Best of Denton County. That’s because we’re about overall fitness.
