Officials at the new Dorothy P. Adkins Elementary School in Lantana are already planning for one of its first “additions,” an outdoor learning center to extend the school’s aviator theme and spirit.
Volunteers on the planning committee aim to creatively make use of an open, outdoor space between two corridors at Adkins.
The courtyard-like space will house opportunities for hands-on learning experiences through gardening, meteorology, science and the arts.
Local landscaping companies, including Mighty
Mowers and Outdoor Signature, have shown interest in lending support. Target and Whole Foods also expressed interest in helping to make the project a reality.
With support from other local businesses, the school would like to supply outdoor electricity, a covered patio or arbor and a stage for small theatrical productions.
Students’ artistic renderings have already begun to inspire.
The planning team is optimistic that through the support of the community, students will soon be having so much fun in the outdoor learning center that they will forget they are learning.
