As an ER nurse, Wilson Mask works twelve-hour shifts with thirty-minute lunch breaks. He knew that he needed to be in better physical shape to keep up with his fast-paced job and growing family. When his pregnant wife had to take a break from her weekly appointment at Strada Fitness, a personal training studio in Flower Mound, Wilson decided to take her spot and make a change.
He first met Luke and Chani Overstreet, the owners of Strada Fitness, who started him off slowly on a fitness regimen.
Later, Jake Camp, another professional fitness coach at the studio, began training Wilson. Jake placed the 34-year-old Wilson with a group of teenagers training for high school football season.
“At first, I wasn’t sure what to think about that,” said Wilson. “Then I began to use the teenagers as motivation. I wasn’t going to let a bunch of kids workout harder than me. I think they thought the same thing about the old man working out with them. It inspired all of us.”
Jake had Wilson working out twice a week, focusing on different muscle groups each time. Wilson also takes advantage of the cardio machines at Strada on off days. Jake also taught Wilson different techniques that he could do on his own time or at home.
“It was a slow, steady transformation, although I immediately felt better after I got off work and had much more energy throughout the day,” Wilson added.
Last summer, Wilson began planning a family beach vacation, so he asked Jake to help him lose some extra inches off his waist before the trip. Jake introduced a small portion size and low sugar diet to Wilson. These dietary changes, along with Wilson’s workout regimen, made it possible to drop 10 extra pounds in a short amount of time.
Though he says he’s now down to his optimal weight, Wilson has continued to go to Strada Fitness weekly to stay fit.
“There’s always room for improvement,” Wilson said. “I especially focus on my physical strength in order to keep up with my two young girls.”
Wilson and his wife are now working out together one day a week. The time the couple spends together at Strada Fitness has become one of their favorite things to do together.
“We continue to workout together because of the great people who work there and the wide range of information and support they provide for their clients,” Wilson stated. “If you have ever thought it was time to make a change, I say call Strada and go for it!”
