Fun run helps four-legged friends

The Humane Society of Flower Mound has benefited from a fundraiser for the last several years that HSFM representative Tracy Kempf said has been critical to the facility’s continued operation.

The 10th Annual Wellington Family Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, May 18, this year, and Kempf said that everything got started when the HSFM was approached by the Wellington organization’s former fitness director.

“The Humane Society was Wellington’s partner for the race the very first year it was held, in 2004,” Kempf said. “Amy Gillette was the fitness director at Wellington then and asked HSFM to be their charity.”

Fran Mills, Wellington’s current fitness director, approached the HSFM again in 2009 to partner with them.

In the last five years, the event has raised $18,000 for the HSFM, and Kempf said the proceeds help the facility in a number of ways.

“This fundraiser helps the HSFM by raising much needed funds to help rescue, treat and place more animals into loving homes,” Kempf said. “We are an all volunteer organization and operate on 100 percent of donations, grants and funds raised from events like this.”

Wellington’s Family Fun Run/Walk, a community-wide event hosted by the Wellington Athletic Club, includes a USATF certified 5K race, 1-mile fun run/walk, and silent auction.

The event is open to everyone, and participants are welcome to run or walk with their dogs. All proceeds from race entry fees, donations, t-shirt sales, and silent auction bids will be given to the Humane Society of Flower Mound.

Kempf said that the Fun Run is one of the more enjoyable and profitable fundraisers the HSFM is a part of each year and said she is always impressed with the turnout for the event.

“This is HSFM’s second or third largest fundraiser,” Kempf said. “Aside from monies raised from race entries, there is a small silent auction that raises anywhere from $500 – $1,000.  This is an exciting fundraiser where we can utilize volunteers in anything from soliciting donations for the silent auction to passing out water on the day of the event to walking a dog that’s available for adoption. HSFM usually has 2-4 dogs available for adoption at the race.”

Kempf said it means a lot to the HSFM that Wellington has chosen their organization to benefit from the Fun Run and said it is an event that is a lot of fun for everyone involved.

“It is an absolute privilege to be the charity chosen by the Wellington Athletic Club for the Fun Run,” Kempf said. “Fran Mills at Wellington has been so easy to work with and the Fun Run is an awesome family event.  The weather is usually perfect, there’s always a good turnout and HSFM gains exposure and raises money for the animals.  You can’t ask for more than that!”
