X-Town Shootout lives up to name

It was a wild weekend of soccer for the Argyle High School girls as they placed second in the X-Town Shootout tournament Saturday in Boswell, TX.

After winning three games, the girls ended up short in the championship final against Lake Dallas by a score of 1-0.

In the first game, Argyle beat Alvin High School handedly, 3-0.

The second game was against Venus, and the girls scored a record seven goals – the most under second year head coach, Jennifer Goodpaster – shutting out Venus in the process.

Their third game against Boswell for a chance to get to the championship match was quite a shootout, ending in a penalty kick thriller.

Argyle’s goalkeeper, Morgan Thompson, saved an incredible shot in the upper right hand corner in the last two minutes of the game.  She punched the shot over the goal to keep the score tied at 0-0 at the end of the game.  Because one of the two teams had to win in order to go to the championship game, it went down to penalty kicks.

A penalty kick is when the goalkeeper stands on the goal line, and the player kicks the ball from 12 yards out.

On Argyle’s first shoot, Ella Galvin missed her shot while the Boswell player scored, making the score Argyle 0, Boswell 1.

Then Argyle’s Madison Lee missed her shot as well, and Boswell again made their shot.

On the third shot, Argyle’s Morgan Thompson saved Boswell’s penalty kick and Argyle’s Tess Athey made her kick, making it Argyle 1, Boswell 2.

Then Kylee Harper of Argyle made her shot and Thompson made another magnificent save to tie the game 2-2.

Hannah Neece of Argyle and Boswell both scored their next penalty kicks to make it 3-3.

Allyson Book of Argyle made her penalty kick, giving Argyle a 4-3 advantage. Thompson saved Boswell’s last penalty kick and Argyle made it to the finals of a tournament for the first time in the team’s history.

It was also the first time the girls have placed in a tournament under Coach Goodpaster.
