Despite a valiant fourth quarter rally, the Argyle Eagles came up just short in its bid for its first ever state football championship on Friday afternoon at Cowboys Stadium, losing 21-14 to Wimberley.
The Eagles wrapped up the season with a 14-2 mark and undefeated district record.
Cole Hedlund gave Argyle the lead late in the first quarter, kicking a 24-yard field goal to make it 3-0 heading into the second.
Wimberley took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter and led 14-3 heading into the fourth.
Austine Aune then cut the Eagles deficit to three less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, scoring on an eight yard scramble and then converting a pass to Chadd Bossow.
Wimberley scored again to make it 21-11, before Hedlund drilled a 36-yard field goal to make it 21-14.
Wimberley was able to hold on for the victory.
Adam Khan had nine receptions for 110 yards for Argyle in the contest, and Aune passed for 240 yards.
