On the Right Track

Cub Scout Pack 1225 of Flower Mound recently held their annual Pinewood Derby race in the Liberty Elementary School gymnasium.

Over 80 handmade cars were entered into the race. Among the winners were Holden Franklin’s Sponge Bob car (pictured left) which took first place in the Wolf Scouts, and Connor Fyffe’s military vehicle in the ‘Most Realistic’ category.

The Pinewood Derby is in it’s 58th year after being created in 1952 by Don Murphy, a Cub Master from Manhattan Beach, CA.

Murphy said that he wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition.  It was told that when he saw the looks of excitement on the faces of the young scouts (and their fathers), he knew he had created something special.

And judging by those same looks of excitement on the scouts of Pack 1225 (and their fathers), his creation has been a huge success!
