August in North Texas puts a lot of stress on a home. Air conditioners run almost nonstop, families use more water, and small problems that were easy to ignore earlier in the year can suddenly become much bigger issues.
Let’s start with the air conditioner. It is normal for an AC system to run longer when temperatures are near 100 degrees, but it should still keep your home reasonably comfortable. Pay attention if some rooms are much warmer than others, the airflow feels weak, the system is making new noises, or the indoor temperature keeps climbing even though the unit is running.
Before assuming the worst, check the basics. Replace a dirty air filter, make sure furniture or rugs are not blocking the vents, and clear grass and debris away from the outdoor unit. Also, don’t keep lowering the thermostat hoping the house will cool faster. Your air conditioner cools at the same rate whether it is set at 75 or 65.
August is also National Water Quality Month, which makes it a good time to pay attention to changes in your home’s water and plumbing. Water that suddenly looks, smells, or tastes different should not be ignored. The same is true of low water pressure, rusty stains, sediment, unusual sounds from the water heater, recurring drain problems, or unexplained increases in the water bill.
Not every change means there is a serious health or plumbing problem. Sometimes the cause is mineral buildup, a worn fixture, the water heater, or a temporary change in the municipal water supply. The important thing is to notice when something changes and find out why.
