Denton County officials will add a guardrail to Hickory Creek Road in southern Denton County after an accident last week took the lives of two Denton teens.

For years, Precinct 1 Commissioner Hugh Coleman took a number of safety steps on the road including rebuilding the Hickory Creek embankment, moving Hickory Creek Road five feet further away from the creek and adding rumble strips and signs to slow traffic, according to a press release from Denton County.

“Safety along Hickory Creek Road has long been a concern,” Coleman said. “We have implemented a number of safety enhancements over the years and will begin immediately on our next step of installing guardrails on the straightaways, which adds to existing guardrail along the bends.”

The guardrail will run along the perimeter of the road within the county limits to enhance safety measures already in place. Residents should begin to see construction within the next few weeks.

“We are responsive to residents’ concerns about safety along Hickory Creek Road after recent tragic accidents,” said County Judge Andy Eads. “We hope residents understand that Commissioner Coleman has installed several safety measures over the years and this is a next step on behalf of residents.”
