Olivia Harrison stands up for what she believes.
The Coram Deo Academy senior is a member of the theater and worship bands and choir. She said that of all the things she has encountered in life, peer pressure has been the most difficult to overcome.
“The hardest thing about being a young person is learning how to keep your head up in culture,” Harrison said. “It can be hard and discouraging to stick-to-your-guns and beliefs in a culture that likes to live life however they want, but I believe it’s important to be a good person and to stay strong against a lot of temptations that are so accessible to us.”
Harrison, 18, is also a member of the drill team at Coram Deo Academy and said she learned some of the most important lessons of her life during her time in the program.
“It sounds simple, I know, but it was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have ever done,” Harrison said. “The team was led by a former Rockette, Summyr Whaley, who brought a level of professionalism to the team that I hadn’t reached yet. She, along with my whole team, helped me to grow and reach goals, not only as a dancer, but as a person.
“There were times when I felt discouraged or tired– such as the 6:15 morning practices– and wanted to give up. However, I was taught perseverance, grace, hard work and how to be taught. I learned how to be more professional and polite; and, I believe I am a better person for it.”
The Flower Mound teen carries a 3.9 grade point average and said the best part about attending Coram Deo Academy is the sense of togetherness.
“It truly is a family, and everyone contributes and works together to create a positive school atmosphere,” Harrison said. “I enjoy being taught in an environment that loves God and strives to teach us about him. The people I surround myself with constantly lift me up and encourage me. As I prepare to graduate, I will always feel connected to and welcome at Coram Deo.”
Harrison plans to attend Oklahoma State University in the fall and study Performing Arts.
