Northwest ISD trustees approve District of Innovation plan

The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees approved Tuesday the plan to become a District of Innovation.

By becoming a District of Innovation, NISD joins Denton ISD and Lewisville ISD and will be exempt from some predefined state requirements, including yearly school start dates, certification requirements, teacher mentorship requirements and more, according to a NISD news release.

School districts must have specific plans in place to become a DOI-approved district. Northwest ISD accepted written community input, receiving hundreds of suggestions that a district committee then reviewed.

Northwest ISD is considering an earlier start to the school year, like Denton and Lewisville ISDs have done. NISD will choose between three options, which have start dates of Aug. 14, Aug. 20 and Aug. 25.
