Unity Dog Park set to open this spring

Unity Park

Unity Park in Highland Village will soon be home to a dog park, set to open mid-April, weather permitting.

The 1.5 acre dog park, located on the northeast portion of Unity Park at 2200 Briarhill Blvd., will feature two separate fenced areas – one for small dogs and one for large dogs.

Highland Village dog owners had been using a fenced area behind McAuliffe Elementary School as an off-leash area for dogs. When the Lewisville Independent School District closed the area, users of the spot came to the City to fill the need.

Council directed city staff to look at all park properties and present options to build a dog park.

The former soccer fields at Unity Park that were relocated to the new Doubletree Ranch Park were identified as a good spot for the dog park.

Funding for the park came from the Park Development Fee and Service Area IV and the remaining from the General Fund. City crews installed the irrigation system, benches and flag poles which provided a cost savings.

Opportunities for donations and sponsorships are available for the purchase of benches and cedar shade structures.
