Southern Denton County towns’ trash may be delayed

trash-floodAll the rain of the past few weeks has caused a trash problem for some residents in southern Denton County.

Flooding has closed two of their local landfills, including the one in Lewisville, and slowed collections efforts, Waste Management officials said.

Waste Management says the towns of Double Oak, Highland Village, Flower Mound and Lantana may see some delays in garbage pick-up, even though their truck routes are running on schedule.

“The transportation times are much longer and the trash is much heavier, creating more trips needed because of the weight of the trash,” said Greta Calvery, spokesperson for Waste Management.

This, she said, is causing some areas to experience delayed routes because there are limits to how much weight a trash truck can hold and how many hours drivers can work.

“If the trash is not picked up on the scheduled day, we are asking our cities to relay to the residents to leave the containers out and we will pick up the next day,” Calvery said. “We will catch up as soon as possible.”
