Claire Crisco, 17, Brynn Courtney, 12 and Isaac Geer, 17 are weightlifting students at CrossFit in Flower Mound. They are headed to a national championship later this month in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Cross Timbers Gazette caught up with Crisco and Courtney and talked to them about the sport and the upcoming competition.

Coach David Nichols, the owner of CrossFit Flower Mound, said weightlifting isn’t very popular in warmer climates, but it is common to see in Eastern European countries. And, he said, most people don’t understand it as a sport.

“Olympic weightlifting has beautiful, natural movement,” he said.

When practiced under correct supervision, weightlifting is safe, contrary to some popular opinion, Nichols said.

The trio of weightlifters headed to Minneapolis with Nichols and his wife have qualified for this spot, along with more than 350 other youth from around the United States.
