The Lantana Lightning Swim team is coming off of a strong season in 2012, and Melody Gscheidle, head of the Steering Committee, said this summer could prove to be even better.
The Lightning won a division championship last summer for the first time in club history, and Gscheidle said the team is looking to pick up right where it left off.
“We’re really looking forward to the season,” Gscheidle said. “It seems that as Lantana is growing, the interest in the swim team is growing as well, and we have had a lot of interest in the team.”
The Lantana Lightning is roughly 180 swimmers strong, have athletes from ages 5 to 18 years, and compete in the Dallas Amateur Swimming Association.
Gscheidle’s children, Kurt, Kyle, Chad and Claire, are all competing for the Lightning this coming season.
Registration is still open for the Lantana Lightning swim team, and can be completed on the club’s website at www.thelantanalightning.com.
The team practices in Lantana at the North and South pools in the morning before the pools open.
The Lightning is coached by Denton ISD Aquatics Director Chris Cullen, and Gscheidle said the objective for the swimmers is twofold each year.
“The goal is to develop a love of the sport,” Gscheidle said. “And since it is a summer league, we just try and make it fun for the kids. We want them really to enjoy the sport. Coach Cullen does a good job with his team of coaches to help the kids develop their strokes and also have a great time.”
