Unity in the community

SPAN Inc./Meals on Wheels was named Non-Profit of the Year at the annual Unity in Communities Luncheon Tuesday hosted by the Flower Mound and Lewisville Area Chambers of Commerce and the Highland Village Business Association.

SPAN (Special Programs for Aging Needs) was established in 1974 and is dedicated to services that help Denton County clients enjoy an increased quality of life, maintain their independence and be healthier. Their goal is that seniors will be able to remain in their own home longer as they happily age in place and /or participate more fully in local community life.

Currently SPAN’s programs include Meals on Wheels, group lunches for seniors at six senior centers, nutrition education and transportation services. They also have a Senior Paws program, providing pet food to Meals on Wheels participants who might otherwise be inclined to share their hot lunch with their pets when they are unable to afford pet food.

Last year SPAN volunteers delivered over 68,000 noontime meals to over 500 clients in Denton County.

This year’s Unity in Communities lunch was sponsored by United Community Bank of Highland Village.  The Flower Mound Noon Rotary and Lewisville Noon Rotary sponsored the lunches for the non-profits. With a theme of “Non-Profits Are Lifesavers” the brightly colored decorations set the tone for the gathering.

Twenty five area non-profits participated in the event, including Briarwood Retreat Center, CASA of Denton County, Children’s Advocacy Center of Denton County, Cleaning for a Reason, Communities in Schools of North Texas, Cross Timbers YMCA, Denton County Friends of the Family, Flower Mound Performing Arts, Heavenly Supply Depot, HHS/Academic Excellence Foundation, Heroes of Denton County, Keep Flower Mound Beautiful, Keep Lewisville Beautiful, Lewisville Education Foundation, Lewisville Lake Symphony, Lewisville Lions, Operation Peace of Mind, Pedi Place, RSVP of Denton County, The Salvation Army; SPAN, Inc./Meals on Wheels, The Friends of the Flower Mound Library, Voices of Flower Mound, Women of Flower Mound and Youth and Family Counseling.
