Flowback - How the Texas Natural Gas Boom Affects Health and Safety PDF Print E-mail

This week, the Texas Oil and Gas Accountability Project (TX-OGAP) released an  informative new report titled, 'Flowback - How the Texas Natural Gas Boom Effects Health and Safety'.

Living here in Flower Mound, we are often inundated with gas drilling articles and reports.  If you are only going to read one in the coming weeks, I encourage you to make this it.  The report and accompanying press release can be found at www.earthworksaction.org.  The report makes clear that this is an ongoing battle; one best fought with an informed citizenry.

While I wish it were not true, gas drilling remains the single largest issue threatening the quality of life of Flower Mound families.  What is clear to me is that although in the last year under Mayor Northern's leadership our community has made great strides in protecting our citizens from health, safety and welfare effects of urban gas drilling, there is much left to be done.  Mayor Northern knows this as does Mayor Pro-tem Filidoro, and Councilmembers Hayden and Lyda.  They are all committed to protecting this community without hesitation or equivocation.

Because I am as committed as they are and have the depth of experience to join them in addressing these and other complex challenges, I have earned each of their endorsements on the Town Council race for Place #1.  I have not and will not accept an endorsement  nor money from pro-drilling special interests, especially those motivated by their own profit, who have brazenly petitioned the state to interfere with our town's right to regulate gas drilling within the boundaries of our own municipality at the expense of the health and safety of our families.

I hope you find the report informative and that I can count on your vote in the upcoming municipal election.

Jeff Whittaker
Flower Mound, TX

@Hi - once more you twisting words about Kendra!

Kendra has been open on her stand on all issues facing the town - I recommend each person interested in voting to take a good look at her website and ask questions to her or her campaign volunteers at the polling place if they need clarification. She will ask tough questions when needed and she is standing for the benefit of all the residents of Flower Mound. While her words have been twisted by her opponents, I am confident voters who look deeper will understand why Kendra has the support of several people who worked very hard on the earlier petition drive against CCFs.

@Jenny - let’s compare here:
1. Stephenson says she has 20 years experience?. Whittaker is a reputable financial planner and CPA in Flower Mound. His reputation is untarnished.
2. Stephenson has been involved in Flo Mo for 2 years including a brief stint on O&G. Whittaker has served on P&Z, Flo Mo Community Development Corp., Flo Mo Chamber of Commerce and is a board member to Flo Mo library and the new hospital. She quit based on principles, he continues to serve.
3. Stephenson’s single leadership track record is her recent time as the Sanctuary HOA president. According to most, that ended poorly. Whittaker is a leader on various boards and as a small business owner in Flo Mo.
4. When it comes to the hot button issue of drilling, Whittaker has been consistent. Stephenson has been confusing given her recent desire to "explore" drilling.
Based on actions and experience, not talk, Whittaker is the superior candidate.

Mellany, why are you baiting me? I already told you I am not going to say anything negative about Jeff. And if I know anyone else is, I will ask them not to. It is not in the best interest of any individual to have their personal reputation attacked in public. Why does it matter if he has made mistakes? Why does it have to be put out in public? If I put out negative examples of his character, how would that change what his position is on the issues? And that is what matters to the voters. So, please, each voter, visit the web sites and make your own educated choice about which candidate best fits your interests and desires for Flower Mound. I have found the web sites are the only true place to find the facts!

It is a shame that the encouragement this candidate has shown for Texas OGAP's Flowback report has resulted in personal attacks and candidate bashing, resulting in deflection from an excellent report which aims to bring light and attention to the critical dangers shale gas production presents. Many of those written about, as well as the author, Sharon Wilson are my friends. None of these people deserved to be drug into this issue, but have risen above and use their own time and monies to bring light to help others, so that they might not suffer as they have. I have personally seen the sores, scars, water, test results, witnessed & reported illegal dumping, and many other atrocities heaped on us by the bad operators. The toxins that overflow from Argyle Central run through Flower Mound, and the winds blow each way. We are all in this together. A Nation divided cannot stand.

Tammi - Sorry - you actually believe what you wrote? Black is white and white is black too.

@ Conspiracy - We definitely haven't seen enough of Jeff's face to know him the way "some" might know him. Then again, most of those people have very good things to say and he is dealing with a family crisis that is probably more important than this election... What we have seen though, is the two faces of Ms. Stephenson.

Conspiracy. You missed the point of the post. Well, maybe you didn't but felt it important to try to discredit me. It didn't matter if they called Mr. Hilliard to tell him the moratorium was coming. It still would have been considered an amended permit. The moratorium ment nothing to the Hilliard well site. Now if a moratorium had been put in back in 2009 when it was first being talked about, then that might have made a difference. Remember, a different council and not NFL had the majority then.

@mellany - you just don't know Jeffy the way some people know Jeffy. Careful, Careful or you may get what you ask for.

@Tammi,
Conspiracy? - I haven't heard of a conspiracy except if you mean when someone from the Town called Ronnie and told him the moratorium was comming - now that's a conspiracy.
How does that make you feel that you being one of the town's biggest activist was sold out by the very people that you fought to put in office? See what loyalty gets you?
