Adam Yook believes it is important to be well-rounded.
The Flower Mound senior is a captain of the robotics team at FMHS, runs cross country and is a member of the Boy Scouts. He said he likes to be involved in a variety of activities.
“If I have the potential and desire to do well, I see no reason why I should not pursue what I want to do in life,” Yook said. “This mindset has led me to achieve far greater intellectual and physical accomplishments that I would not have been able to achieve by only focusing on school or grades.”
Yook, 17, is also a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Science Honor Society and was in band his freshman year. One of the thing he enjoys the most about FMHS is the ability to explore new things– something the school’s faculty encourages.
“I have enjoyed the freedom to pursue a variety of activities and be exposed to a diverse student population,” Yook said. “I accidentally discovered, for instance, my gift for CAD– computer-aided design– when I signed up for Engineering Design and Presentation as an alternate course. This chance-event has significantly enhanced both my capabilities and interests in robotics and STEM.”
Yook is currently completing an Engineering Internship with IP Illustrations. He also competes in track and field, plus club soccer. He said, at times, it can become stressful.
“Stress management has been a recurring issue that I have to deal with,” Yook said. “Balancing the expectations of my soccer team, robotics, myself, teachers, mentors and my college aspirations has been a challenge throughout my high school career. Sometimes, the stress gets to be too much and I have to take a step back and allow myself to relax and enjoy myself.
“Additionally, I deal with stress through playing the piano and physical activity with soccer and cross country. By focusing on the task at hand, running, beating another player or creating music, I am able to relieve the stress buildup that has occurred.”
Yook is ranked 23rd in his graduating class of 855 students and carries a 5.2 weighted grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
He plans to attend Duke University following his senior year and major in Mechanical Engineering.
