You’re Beautiful 2013 is a celebration of life, and while funds will be raised and clothing will be on display, Pat Sherman said it is important not to lose sight of the reason for the event.
The 10th Annual You’re Beautiful! Fashion Show and Luncheon on Jan. 25 will benefit the American Cancer Society, and Sherman, who serves as the event co-chair, said this year’s fundraiser is special.
“This was started by three or four Denton County women who were cancer survivors doing what they could to celebrate survivors, while also raising funds for research and local patient services,” Sherman said. “This is the 10th anniversary, and instead of having a keynote speaker, we are going to honor and focus and remember the many who have built this event.
“If people attend this event, they will take away a celebration and appreciation of life. Our models in the fashion show are all cancer survivors, and it is an amazing experience. Through the last 10 years, we’ve had teenagers up to people in their 80’s, and they are all there to celebrate life and surviving.”
Sherman said that the You’re Beautiful 2013 committee has invited back all of the previous years models, and said many of them are returning for the event.
The goals for this year’s event are to raise $45,000 and awareness for cancer research, and Sherman said this is such a passion for her because she has been touched by cancer in her personal life.
“My husband is a cancer survivor,” Sherman said. “But that was within the last two years, and I was involved with You’re Beautiful long before his diagnosis. We lost his mother to cancer many years ago when she was in her mid-50’s.
“My father had cancer as well as his father, and then my sister-in-law was one of the original founders, and she has had cancer twice.”
Sherman said a number of people on the You’re Beautiful committee have been affected by cancer through family members and friends as well.
In the 10 years of the event, Sherman said only three of the more than 100 models have passed away from cancer and said the event is held each year to celebrate that fact.
“It just reminds us all of what a gift life is,” Sherman said.
The You’re Beautiful 2013 committee asks that consideration be given to underwriting and attending this year’s You’re Beautiful 2013 event.
