Flower Mound food blogger to appear on hit Food Network show

Kris Longwell and Wesley Loon

A Flower Mound food blogger will appear on Guy’s Grocery Games, the hit Food Network show, on June 5.

Kris Longwell started a food blog about five-and-a-half years ago as a hobby, but it has become his full-time job. Named How to Feed A Loon after the big appetite of Longwell’s husband, Wesley Loon, the blog has about 500,000 monthly visitors and a growing social media presence. Longwell said the couple aims to develop a delicious recipe and then make it approachable for home cooks. You can find recipes for all types of cuisines on the blog, with a focus on southern, Italian and Asian comfort foods.

They were recently contacted by Food Network producers about potentially appearing on Guy’s Grocery Games, featuring Guy Fieri, and the interest was mutual.

“What’s unique about this episode was that it would have four home cooks,” Longwell said. “The show had always been, until that point, professional chefs … but they ultimately decided to try to find four of the best home cooks in the country, and they ultimately chose me.”

Longwell can’t say much about what happened on the show, but he did say that it was an exciting challenge, and also a little intimidating. Participants are given 30 minutes to race through a grocery store, gather their ingredients and cook a meal for three judges, all after Fieri throws in a twist to make things even more difficult.

“It was surreal,” Longwell. “When you’re watching the show, you wonder if it’s really like that, really as hard as they make it seem. It’s exactly as it seems on the show, only more intense.”

Longwell’s episode will be shown on Food Network at 8 p.m. on June 5.
