Roadwork near dam will affect commute

Southern Denton County commuters will have a new wrinkle in their routes to deal with starting this week.

The City of Grapevine will begin the phased reconfiguration of Fairway Drive, commonly known as the Lake Grapevine Dam Road, at Highway 26 on Monday.

The project will remove the current right turn lane from southbound Fairway Drive to westbound Highway 26, which was previously a yield-to-opposing traffic right turn. All right turns from southbound Fairway Drive will now be controlled by the traffic light at Highway 26 utilizing a dedicated right turn lane.

The yielded right turn is being eliminated because of a high volume of accidents, as that same right lane is used to access the Gaylord Texan on westbound Highway 26, according to Grapevine officials.

The 4 to 6 week project (weather dependent) will impact morning and evening rush hour commutes.

Many residents utilize Fairway Drive as an alternative to FM 2499, which is undergoing major construction due to the DFW Connector project.
