District considering open enrollment

The Denton ISD Board of Trustees is studying a proposal to offer open student enrollment to increase revenue and student numbers for the 2010-11 school year.

The proposed policy change would open district schools and facilities to students living outside district boundaries on a tuition-free basis.

Denton ISD currently accepts transfers from district employees and for special programs, such as the International Baccalaureate Program, LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex and deaf education.

Under the proposal, non-resident students would be allowed to apply for tuition-free transfer to Denton ISD as long as requested campuses have available space to admit transfer students.

The district would consider availability of space and instructional staff as well as disciplinary history, academic standing and attendance history of the student requesting transfer before approval is granted.
