The Canyon Oaks Garden Club is sponsoring a project to replace oak trees destroyed in the construction of the new Lantana fire station on Copper Canyon Rd.
The club will hold a Tree Planting Ceremony at the fire station this Saturday at 10:00 a.m., where members will plant a Shumard Oak tree.
A Shumard Oak was selected because of its long life span and high tolerance to drought and restricted water conditions, said garden club member Patricia Heberling. Its leaves remain green long into the fall and then turn a deep orange-red.
Funds from the upcoming Canyon Oaks Community Garden Tour and Plant Sale, scheduled for April 24th, have been earmarked for the tree planting project, Heberling said.
