Texas Game Wardens, Flower Mound firefighters and Grapevine firefighters are searching Lake Grapevine on Thursday for a teenager who went missing in the lake on Tuesday night.

A group of five or six people were on a sailboat on the south end of the lake about 9 p.m. Tuesday when a storm blew through and tipped the boat over, said Capt. Cliff Swofford, a Game Warden with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Everyone fell out into the water, and all but one were able to swim back to the boat.

A 19-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, tried to swim back to the boat, but it kept moving away from him, and he eventually went under the water and hasn’t been seen since, Swofford said. The victim was not wearing a life jacket.

Game Wardens, Flower Mound firefighters and Grapevine firefighters have been searching the lake since then, Swofford said Thursday afternoon.

Swofford urged future lake visitors to always wear a life jacket.

“In my 16 years of doing this, I’ve never seen a drowning victim who was wearing a life jacket,” he said.
