Foodie Friday: Farm-to-table style breakfast and lunch at First Watch Cafe

Breakfast may very well be my favorite meal of the day. There’s almost nothing I love more than starting the day off with a well-balanced, comforting breakfast. Which means I’m always on the lookout for more breakfast-serving restaurants. When I heard the news that a new breakfast-brunch-lunch restaurant was going in where the old Egg & I was off of FM 407 and Morris Rd, I knew I had to give it a try.

Fresh Watch opened its original location back in 1983 when there weren’t a whole lot of breakfast-focused restaurants. They opened from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. serving just breakfast, brunch and lunch and found that there were lots of people who really responded to that kind of restaurant and experience.

What I really love about First Watch is that you can feel the farm-to-table style from the moment you walk in the doors.

Everything in the restaurant is made to order and made from scratch. And they try to use as many locally-sourced items as possible. They serve a delicious array of fresh juices including the Root Down (carrot, Fuji apple, beet, lemon, ginger); the Day Glow (carrot, orange, lemon and organic ginger); and the Kale Tonic (kale, Fuji apple, cucumber and lemon).

They’re also very accommodating when it comes to food allergies. Just let them know what your allergy is and the entire kitchen staff will take precautions to ensure your dish comes out just the way you need it.

The other great thing about First Watch is that while it’s farm-to-table style (which most people associate with only “healthy” menu items), you can go as healthy or as indulgent as you’d like. Chef Shane Schaibly, First Watch’s Vice President of Culinary Strategy, created the menu so that there would be something for everyone.

We ordered several breakfast dishes to give you a good idea of what’s on their menu (and we’ll have to head back at some point to give their lunch menu items a try too).

We had an AWESOME waitress during our visit who was able to help us narrow our selections down to some of their most popular dishes. So, here goes!

If pancakes are your thing, you absolutely must try their Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. They add fresh whipped ricotta cheese to their multigrain pancake batter and then top the two pancakes with marinated berries and a creamy lemon curd. They’re rich yet light, and I wouldn’t even worry about drizzling them with syrup! The berries and lemon curd are the perfect toppings as-is.

We also tried their Elevated Egg Sandwich made with cage-free eggs, bacon, Gruyere cheese, smashed avocado, mayo, arugula and lemon served on a brioche bun. It also comes served with a side of their season homestyle potatoes. If you like the kind of breakfast you can really put your hands on, you can’t go wrong with this sandwich!

If you want a little bit of everything for breakfast, we’d also highly recommend one of their skillet hashes. We tried the Farmhouse Hash made with cage-free eggs (cooked just how you like) served over a mixture of their homestyle potatoes, bacon, avocado, onions, tomatoes and cheese. It’s like a breakfast party where all the classic breakfast items got an invite.

First Watch also has some fantastic omelets to choose from. We ordered their Bacado which is made with bacon, avocado and Monterey Jack cheese and comes topped with sour cream and housemade pico de gallo. Their omelets also come served with a side of whole grain toast and lightly dressed organic mixed greens. The mixed greens aren’t necessarily something I’d think of ordering at breakfast, but they provided the perfect bit of freshness to the dish. And if you’re a little more health-conscious, you can substitute for all egg whites in your omelet for no additional charge.

There are so many other incredible options on the menu. And like we mentioned earlier, you can go as healthy or as indulgent as you’d like with your choices. Which makes First Watch a great place to eat breakfast out no matter what kinds of eaters you have in your home.

I loved our breakfast experience at First Watch. From the moment we stepped inside to the moment they put the food on our table, I couldn’t wait to dive in. I anticipate we’ll be spending many more breakfasts and lunches at First Watch, so we hope to see you there on one of our visits!

*First Watch is located at 2201 Justin Rd Ste 301, Flower Mound 75028 (in the Tom Thumb shopping center in front of Verf’s).
