Kathryn Appleman of Flower Mound has been awarded a Boren Fellowship to study in China during the 2015-16 academic year.
Appleman is currently a graduate student in U.S. Foreign Policy and National Security at American University in Washington, D.C. She will study Uyghur language at Xinjiang University in Urumqi.
She is 22 years old, born in Dallas and was raised in Flower Mound. She graduated from Flower Mound High School.
As a Boren Fellow, she will spend a year in far-west China studying Uyghur ethnic language and culture, and advanced Mandarin. Upon her return, she hopes to work for the U.S. Department of State.
