Lantana’s two Fresh Water Supply District boards at their January meeting discussed concerns about the use of golf carts operated by underage drivers on public streets and sidewalks in the community.
“There are really young kids driving golf carts and I am concerned about someone getting creamed,” said FWSD #7 board member Jim Lieber.
Kevin Mercer, Lantana’s General Manager, said that state law allows the use of golf carts in Lantana for a specific purpose.
“In a golf course community it is lawful to operate a golf cart on public streets if the operator is on their way to or from the golf course,” said Mercer.
Registration is not needed to drive a golf cart in Texas and there is no minimum legal age to operate one.
Mercer said that he contacted the Sheriff’s Department and they will be watching closely for golf cart violations.
