Marcus High School defeated Garland Lakeview Centennial in a thriller Saturday night in Austin to win their first 5A state championship.
The Marauders got off to a quick start, but Lakeview rallied in the second half and kept the game close. Just a basket separated the teams at the end, with Marcus holding on 40-38.
Marauders forward Marcus Smart had 16 points and 11 rebounds and was named the game’s MVP.
Hundreds of fans made the trip to Austin to watch the game, including Highland Village Mayor Scott McDearmont.
“In 1987 the Marcus Basketball program began varsity play with no seniors and a tough season. The next year we won the district championship. Tonight that journey continues in Austin 23 years later with a new generation,” said McDearmont before the game.
The Marauders are led by Head Coach Danny Henderson and Assistant Coaches Kenny Boren, Fred Jones, Will Kates and Eli Rodriguez.
