Memorial golf tournament to benefit Lantana family

The Mark Austry Family Memorial Fund and the Lantana Golf Club Student Scholarship were selected as beneficiaries of the 2010 Lantana Golf Club Memorial Tournament, to be held on August 15.

The Mark Austry Family Memorial Fund was established following the untimely death of Mark Austry on March 14 after he finished the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas Half Marathon.

Austry, a 32-year-old Lantana resident, died unexpectedly from a rare disease called viral myocarditis, an inflammation of the myocardium caused by a low-lying infection of the heart.

An avid golfer, Austry won the Lantana Golf Club Men’s Championship six years in a row and holds the course record of 63.

“Mark was a devoted husband and father. His strong faith in God led him to experience a short, yet wonderful life,” said Mark’s wife, Mariana Austry.

“I’m speechless when it comes to the amount of support we’ve received. The outreach from friends and the community is a direct reflection of the impact Mark had on people.”
The Lantana Golf Club Student Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Lantana Golf Club members to provide an annual scholarship to a college-bound Guyer High School Senior. This year’s recipient was Karen Pidlaoan.

The four-person scramble tournament on Sunday, August 15, will feature a double shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The tournament is sold out in the morning and there are 10 foursomes left for the afternoon start.

A registration fee of $125 per player includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch, goody bag, prizes and hole-in-one contests.
Tee times are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register early by calling the pro shop at (940) 728-4653, ext. 1.
North Star Academy will provide child care from 1-9 p.m. at their location in Lantana for afternoon golfers at a rate of $5 per hour, per child. Child care reservations are required and accepted through the pro shop when registering for the tournament.
The Lantana Golf Club Memorial Tournament was founded in 2007 by members as a fundraising event for local charitable causes. Previous tournaments have benefited Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer and Denton County Friends of the Family. The tournament fully funded the Hank Womack Scholarship at Newman Smith High School in 2009. The memorial tournament honors Lantana Golf Club members who have passed away: Hank Womack, Hal Maxwell, James Corbett, Rachele Bowman and Mark Austry.
