Women’s Club awards scholarships

The Double Oak Women’s Club awarded $500 scholarships to two deserving college-bound seniors from Double Oak at their May meeting.

Lillian Haynes, daughter of Kevin and Celia Haynes, plans to enter the field of biomedical research after obtaining her under-graduate and master’s degrees. Lillian graduated with a ranking of number one in her class at Marcus High School, where she was a leader in numerous clubs and organization and also excelled in fencing.  She is an accomplished pianist who teaches piano lessons and has performed in numerous competitions, developing her stage presentations to enhance her confidence for public speaking.  Lillian will attend Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA, one of the premier math, science, and engineering colleges in the nation, to major in Biomedical Science.

Nicole Ramsey, daughter of Mike and Laura Ramsey, has plans to pursue a career in fashion design, hoping to become involved in costume design for the New York Ballet Company or for Broadway shows. Nicole has been a part of a rigorous homeschooling cooperative and has excelled in a strict academic program which requires an astute mind with much disciplined study. She has also participated in numerous outside activities, including Debate and 4-H Clubs, band, and dance. Nicole plans to attend Texas Tech University with a major in Apparel Design.

Both of these students are well-rounded, with strong goals and a strong academic record, and we wish them much success!

New Neighbors
Double Oak Women’s Club greeter, Jolene Barr, recently greeted two families moving to Double Oak.

Dan and Carice Welch moved here this past spring from Lewisville. They found Double Oak just driving around looking. Dan is in marketing and Carice is a homemaker who also has a home-based business. The Welch’s and their two boys, Alex and Evan, enjoy fishing and basketball, while Carice also enjoys decorating, cooking, and reading. They have two pets, a couple of adorable miniature pinchers, Kizi and Koki. Dan is originally from New York, with roots in Barbados, and the family loves to travel. We’re glad they travelled to Double Oak. Welcome!

Coming here last month from Tucson, AZ, Brett and Christie Johnson looked for grass and trees with some elbow room; so, of course, Double Oak fills that bill. They didn’t escape hot weather, however; so daughters Briann, 9, and Alyssa, 10, are enjoying their pool every day.  The girls also like to draw and paint and the family enjoys fishing and water sports. Brett is in software technology and Christie is an R.N. and they’ve left two older daughters in Tucson to attend the University of Arizona. Rounding out the family are their two dogs, an adorable miniature pincher and a lovable mutt. Welcome to Double Oak!
