The Guyer Wildcats football team survived a voracious fourth quarter comeback attempt Friday night and defeated John Tyler 57-53 to move on to the state finals.
With Guyer up 50-31 and 6 minutes to play, John Tyler fought for their lives with a touchdown and two successful onside kicks in a row and two more TD’s, resulting in a 22 point swing with the Lions taking a 3 point lead.
Guyer responded with a 12-play drive ending with a Richard Whitaker 18-yard rushing touchdown with 1:14 left on the clock to seal the victory.
The Wildcats (13-2) will face Georgetown (15-0) in the Class 4A Division I state championship game at noon next Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
