Coram Deo Academy’s Lady Lions beat the Highlands Blazers 3-1 to advance to the final four of the TAPPS state tournament.
Once again, they got out to a great start, going up 2-0 quickly. The back row combination of Allison Lewis, Erin Royall and Lydia McCrummen neutralized the Blazers’ jump serves, their main offensive weapon. Holyn Duyck and Kaleigh Longcrier turned in great hitting performances again, but this time they were also joined by Mahlon Dawson and Lydia McCrummen. Mahlon frustrated the Blazers by elevating over their blockers with quick and high contact hits. Lydia did her damage by swinging hard and hitting around the blockers with sharp angled hits.
The Lady Lions were cruising, until once again, they gave up the 3rd set with a tight score of 25-27. A series of well placed hits by the Blazers and tough serves kept them alive and forced a 4th set. However, the Lady Lions quickly refocused. They blew the 4th set wide open with a commanding 9-1 lead, and never looked back, winning the 4th set 25-14 and securing the victory.
The Lady Lions are now one of four teams left in the state tournament which started with a field of 30. They play Colleyville Covenant Christian on Friday at 2 p.m. in San Antonio at Antonian College Preparatory High School. The winner will advance to the championship round and play for the state title.
