City eyes newly acquired property for parking, redevelopment

Highland Village finalized the purchase Friday of property owned by Living Faith United Methodist Church on the northwest corner of Clearwater South and Highland Village Road.

The property, formerly known as the Clearwater Club, includes a clubhouse, pool and tennis courts.

The Clearwater Club was first established in 1964. Two episodes of Magnum, P.I. were filmed at the club when the show was at its peak in the mid 1980’s, according to the Clearwater Club’s old website.

The city plans to improve the existing tennis courts and parking area, fill-in the pool, demolish the clubhouse and use the area for overflow parking for the Robert & Lee DuVall senior center.

“Recreation and community education classes are increasing at the DuVall center and the purchase of this property meets the need for overflow parking,” said Mayor Pat Davis.

The city is developing a business plan to contract with a professional tennis organization to manage the tennis courts on the property.

“A contract with a professional tennis organization to manage and program the tennis courts will provide a popular leisure activity to our residents while ensuring the city incurs no out of pocket expense,” said Davis.
