Man wanted for impersonating attorney in custody

An alleged phony lawyer will soon have his day in court.

Donald Ray Mason, who is suspected of posing as a local attorney and scamming clients, turned himself in to the Flower Mound Police Department Tuesday morning.

Mason, 45, was subsequently arrested and was charged with Tampering with a Governmental Record. His bond was posted at $5,000.

Police said that Mason has been impersonating attorney Lonnie Woods of The Woods Law Firm in municipal courts throughout the Metroplex, including Flower Mound, where police are aware of two incidents.

Mason has also been advertising on the Internet to obtain clients who need assistance handling traffic citations. Once he has a client, police said Mason files fraudulent documents with the court and collects a fee. The victims are left with charges still pending in those courts and the belief that their citation has been properly handled. In some instances, the victims have had warrants issued for their arrest for failure to appear.

Police said that after sending information about Mason to local media outlets and Denton County Crime Stoppers, tips came in from the public that provided information which led to Mason’s arrest.
