Denton Ryan and Guyer’s varsity football teams will represent the Denton Independent School District on television a combined five times during the 2011 football season.
Denton ISD made history last season, becoming the first school district to have two teams playing for a state football championship in the same season with Ryan and Guyer. Expectations are high once again for both programs this year, school officials said.
Ryan will kick-off the season with a nationally-televised home game on ESPN against Sulphur Springs. The game is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.
The Raiders also will be on local television the following week with their game against Carrollton Newman Smith at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Standridge Stadium.
University Interscholastic League rules prohibit the live broadcast of football games on Friday nights, so that game will be shown on tape-delay by KTXA Channel 21.
Guyer will get its turn in the spotlight a few days later with its return to the annual Kirk Herbstreit Football Classic at Cowboys Stadium. The Wildcats will play Cedar Hill at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, on Fox Sports Network.
Guyer’s second television game will come at home against defending District 7-5A champion Coppell on Fox Sports Network. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.
“This is great notoriety for our programs, our student-athletes, the school district and the city of Denton. This type of stuff really gets people excited and wanting to come to Denton and be a part of our successful schools and athletic programs,” said Ken Purcell, athletic director for Denton ISD.
The athletic department has been in discussions about other possible television broadcasts this season, but nothing has been confirmed,Purcell said.
