Neighbors and friends are rallying around the Loerwald family of Copper Canyon as their 19-year-old daughter, Makenna, battles a rare bone cancer.
Randy Bohannon of Lantana, a family friend of the Loerwalds, is sponsoring a golf tournament, and anyone who signs up to play will help the family as all proceeds will go toward treatment expenses.
Bohannon said he has known Makenna since she was a young lady, and his daughter, Chelsea, and Makenna played sports together, went to Guyer High School together and now are roommates at Texas State University.
“Her attitude is phenomenal,” Bohannon said, “and she is fighting this with a vengeance.”
Makenna was first diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in November of 2009, and recent scans show that she has relapsed. Treatments consist of a regimen of chemo, surgery and radiation.
Ewing Sarcoma is a rare adolescent cancer typically found in people 10-20 years of age. It is usually found in the bone, but can also be found in the tissue.
Bohannon said he often thinks of Makenna and her fight against cancer that is taking place at the same time she is attending college.
“Whatever I’m experiencing daily is nothing compared to what she is going through.” Wanting to help the family with mounting medical expenses, he is hoping to get a great response to the golf tournament. “I am trying to get a full field,” he said.
The tournament is Sunday, July 17, at Lantana Golf Club. The shotgun start is at 2:00 p.m.
