Flower Mound Mayor Melissa Northern recently updated readers of The Cross Timbers Gazette on road projects currently underway in town.
Here is a rundown on the Texas Department of Transportation projects and road upgrades being handled by the town:
TxDOT Projects:
FM 1171 – construction is underway to widen the two-lane thoroughfare into a six-lane urban roadway. Section one, from FM2499 to Shiloh, is scheduled to be complete in March 2011, and construction is scheduled to begin on sections II and III, from Shiloh to I-35W, in February 2012. Members of the Town Council and Commissioner Mitchell met with TxDOT in July and expressed concern over the lack of visible progress on this project. The agency agreed to expedite construction as much as possible.
FM 407 – the project scope includes widening FM 407 from a two-lane rural road to a four-lane divided thoroughfare from Chinn Chapel Road to Briarhill. Construction is scheduled to be complete in April 2011.
FM 2499 – all of the Flower Mound sections are substantially complete and open to traffic. Section IV, from FM 407 to FM 2181, is scheduled to be complete in April 2011.
Flower Mound Projects:
Garden Ridge Blvd. – construction to improve the road to a divided greenway four-lane thoroughfare from FM 3040 to Spinks Road is scheduled to be complete in July 2011.
Spinks Road – Construction of a Spinks Road extension from Garden Ridge to Duncan lane is scheduled to be complete this month.
Flower Mound Road Extension – expansion of the road from a two-lane rural to a four-lane divided thoroughfare from FM 1171 to Skillern is scheduled to be complete in June 2011. The intersection of FM 1171 and Quail Run will be complete prior to the opening of the 2010-2011 school year.
Flower Mound Road Reconstruction – This project includes the reconstruction of Flower Mound Road from Old Settlers Road to the vicinity of the FM 2499 intersection. This will be a full pavement reconstruction and shall provide for an improved roadway profile and the realignment at the intersection of Stanford Drive to improve sight lines, safety, and additional length in the turn lanes. The project is scheduled to be complete in May 2011.
Morriss/Gerault Phase I – Intersection, safety, and landscaping improvements on Morriss/Gerault Road from FM 2499 to FM 3040 are scheduled to be complete in October 2011. Intersection, turn lane, and road improvements near Forestwood Middle School are almost complete and will provide better access and an entirely different flow of traffic to and from the school to improve safety and prevent traffic backup on Morriss Road.
Mayor Northern said that several other road construction and rehabilitation projects are currently in the planning stages in Flower Mound, including the expansion of Dixon Road from a two-lane, asphalt road to a four-lane concrete thoroughfare.
