Guyer Teacher Competing on 'Idol'

Kimberly Carver has always dreamed of getting a shot at a big time record contract. American Idol is giving her that chance.

The Guyer High School English teacher is a contestant on Nielsen’s top-rated television show this season.

Carver, 26, has taught at Guyer for the past three years and did her student teaching at the school. She is a longtime Denton resident who attended Ryan High and graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in English literature.

Carver has been playing guitar since she was 11, was a member of a band for five years and was among the winners in VH-1’s Save the Music international songwriters contest in 2005. She cites Ray Charles and Willie Nelson among her favorite artists, but plans on being true to herself regardless of the show’s outcome.

“If you can’t sell yourself, you can’t sell anyone else either,” Carver told NBCDFW.com recently. “I think that while I have a definite style, I want to show the judges that I am malleable, too.”
