Denton Independent School District trustees approved a new district aquatics club on May 11, opening up more opportunities for students and finding additional revenue to help with natatorium expenses.

Cost for the 13-week summer program is $150 for students under 14 and $195 for students 15 and older. The fee includes use of the facility for practice, meets - or games for water polo - and instruction from professional coaches.

Denton ISD aquatics coach Chris Cullen already has 70 members already joining this aquatics club.
 
A finance study conducted by district officials shows the aquatics club will produce revenue to help offset district expenses for the natatorium. With 30 more students added to the program - which would meet the club’s maximum enrollment of 100 - the district could net almost $10,000 after expenditures.

The club will meet at the Denton Natatorium, a facility jointly used and operated by the city and Denton ISD, with plans for an inter-club swim meet, individual event area competitions and league water polo games. Aquatics club members will practice four times a week for approximately two hours per session at times that won’t interrupt established city swim programs.
 
The club’s 70 members currently range from ages 8 to 17, but any student who can swim “two to three lengths of the pool comfortably” is welcome to join, said Cullen.
 
Denton ISD qualified four of its six high school water polo teams and 13 individual swimmers for state competition and that success has interest in the aquatics program growing. There are 105 high school students already have registered to participate on high school swimming and water polo teams next school year.
