Most Cyclists Are Good People PDF Print E-mail

As a long time Bartonville resident and avid cyclist, I was dismayed that the Town Council amended its special event ordinance to virtually ban cycle groups from using its roads.  This is a misguided effort that will not fix the main areas of contention: running stop signs and obstructing traffic.  The laws were already on the books – just enforce them, not write new ones!  I’d also like to offer a rebuttal to the recent Cross Timbers Gazette article that portrayed cyclists in an unfair and negative way.  The vast majority of cyclists obey the traffic laws and some people have leaped to erroneous conclusions based on a small number of transgressions, some of which (urinating behind Town Hall) may very well not have been by cyclists.  We are tax paying, law abiding citizens, and most of us are parents, too.  Another important positive attribute of the cycling community is the support we give to the bike rallies, every one of which serves as a fundraiser for a local community need.  So we’re really not bad people – don’t let a few bad examples ruin it for all.  We’re just out there enjoying nature and trying to be healthy.  Let’s work together to co-exist peacefully.

Cyclists do drive cars. They know how dangerous it is to ride more than 1 abreast. They know when you drive over a crest the cars can not see the other side. Why they continue to take the entire lane is of course ignorant defiance. The groups that see a car approaching from behind them and quickly move to take take the whole lane, staring you down like they own the road is unbeleivable. That one immature decision affects the saftey of everyone on the road. You can share the road, but do it with responsibility.

At the end of the day, many roads are funded through gas taxes, toll collections and vehicle registration fees. It’s called a use tax, none are paid by cyclist.

So I say wait for traffic to pass, follow the rules of the road, ride single-file or get the HELL OFF THE ROAD!!! When cyclists start paying for the roads, then they can take up the whole damn lane!

I have no doubt as well that cyclists are good people, although it seems that once they jump on their bike it becomes all about them. Riding 2 abreast and taking up half of the lane is not safe, this is a very common occurance. I do take issue that the poster stated that the vast majority of cyclists obey the traffic laws, my experience is just the opposite, then again maybe keeping to the right, traffic signals and stop signs are just optional for cyclists. If it takes new laws to affect the safety of all then so be it, cyclists only have themselves to blame.

There isn't much contention to the fact that most cyclists are good, hard-working, honest people as much as there is with non-cyclists not wanting bicycles impeding driving conditions on the narrow, two lane roads all over Bartonville and the area in general. Stick to roads that have either a very wide shoulder or have multiple lanes and there will be a lot less fuss about bicyclists. Pretty simple. And throwing the 'law' in people's faces and specifying the 'rights of cyclists' doesn't smooth over the fact that common sense says it's dangerous for bicycles and cars to be that close to each other.
