Open Letter to the Residents of Flower Mound:

I read the March 17, 2010 open letter from Mr. Filidoro and Mr. Hayden titled “Enough is Enough.”   If there is one thing we can agree on it’s that enough IS enough.  Enough of the political grandstanding, manipulation, misinformation, intimidation and, enough of the scare tactics.  Frankly, the divisive and accusatory tone coming from them is harming our town and pitting neighbor against neighbor without reason.

That is why I am writing in response to the politically motivated fear campaign that is currently being waged by Council Members Filidoro and Hayden.

In their joint letter, Filidoro and Hayden reference the “proliferation of gas wells and their industrial complexes.”  They write about an “onslaught of applications” and claim that “while the town has been debating a moratorium, drilling applicants have been accelerating their submissions ahead of any changes that might occur.”  It sounds ominous doesn’t it? There is just one problem with their comments—they are not true.  The truth is that the town has not seen an increase in applications since the moratorium has been discussed.  In fact, the last time a new gas application was filed was December 7, 2009, ten days before the vote on the moratorium.  Since the initial vote and the ensuing conversations about a moratorium the Town has not received even one new gas application.

As for the “industrial complexes” and the “agenda to create an industrialized community in Flower Mound,” no gas company has proposed the installation of any equipment not already found in town and not already addressed in our ordinances.  To indicate otherwise is just irresponsible.

At the December 17, 2009 town council meeting, Mr. Hayden and Mr. Filidoro demanded a moratorium but conceded that a moratorium would not be needed if the TCEQ’s air quality report concluding Flower Mound’s air quality was safe.  Now that the TCEQ and the Town’s independent third-party environmental firm have both determined that the air quality in Flower Mound poses no serious threat of health risk whatsoever, they are still calling for a moratorium.

I have been mischaracterized as being beholden to special interests, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.  I have two children and would never do anything to jeopardize their health and safety or any of the residents of this community.  That said, I do respect the concerns of residents over the issue of urban drilling and urge all gas companies to refrain from requesting variances to setbacks from homes and public buildings.   Further I encourage gas companies to inform our community of their intent to develop gas wells and facilities in our community.  Residents deserve to know their plans.

When residents go to the polls in May, I hope they will see beyond the propaganda and pandering.  Vote for candidates based on the facts—not fear.  Flower Mound deserves no less.

Jean Levenick
Mayor Pro Tem, Town of Flower Mound

Madam Mayor Pro-Tem, I wholeheartedly agree with your last sentence. I, too, believe facts (and perhaps compassion, civility and strategic thinking) should drive all discussions on the direction of Flower Mound. I will listen to each candidate to discern their honest commitment to SmartGrowth and to see if they actually want to represent me and my fellow citizens or if they believe "they know what's best for us" and act accordingly. Forget about what Mr. Filidoro and Mr. Hayden are saying for a moment. Listen to the more than 4,000 voters who have signed the Flower Mound Cares Petition. We do not want to "grow" a large, industrial collection & storage facility on Scenic Road. And most of us want to believe that local government is working to protect us and to protect our way of life (which we cannot since Jan 21, 2010). BTW, JUST SAY NO TO VARIANCES. You can't expect profit making companies to stop looking for profits no matter what the human cost (see lung cancer & Tobacco companies).

I know actually going out into the community, investigating, listening and talking with the residents of FM is totally foreign to you, maybe you should ask Hayden and Filidoro how to do it? Your continued lack of professionalism is a disgrace to the town (ie "Hiney Gate"). You dismissed the over 3000 signatures of registered FM Voters on the petition presented to council, as insignificant, yet that is more than have ever voted in an FM election and way more than put you in office. There has recently been a spill of over 3000 gallons of fracking fluid, the air quality study did come back with problems and then there were methane plums reported at drilling sites in FM. How many red flags does it take? What about due diligence? Your utter disgregard for the health and safety of the residents of this town has been established , just as your williams lease has established your conflict of interest, and I will not be sorry to see you go. Good riddance!

R. Miller---You might need to explain your logic on this one!

'If you feel her vote was FOR a CCF you are 100% mistaken.'

The truth scares Mr. Filidoro, Mr. Hayden, and Nancy Pelosi wantabe Melissa Northern. Obviously Jean you have struck a nerve with these mind numbed robots. Amazing; they don't even have the guts to use their real names as they hurl insults at you. What a bunch of cowards.

Jean you have more courage in your little pinky toe than these cowards will ever have in their lives.

Jean thank you for all the good you have done for the people in Flower Mound. I know the seniors will miss your service to them most.

“enjoy those monthly royalty checks you're getting from Williams. You worked hard for them!” Whoever wrote this should be ashamed and as a dad, I hope you are teaching your children to show some show common courtesy to others instead of sitting behind a computer screen like a coward.
“vote to approve zoning changes that will allow a massive industrial wasterwater collection facility” Please educate yourself. If you feel her vote was FOR a CCF you are 100% mistaken.

In my opinion, the March 19th front page of the newspaper was spot on with their front page article titled 'Murder for Money' with a picture of our wonderful Mayor. That was too funny.

Ms. Levenick-The reason you have been characterized "as being beholden to special interests" is that you have shown zero effort in making Flower Mound healthier and safer. You did, however, vote to approve zoning changes that will allow a massive industrial wasterwater collection facility. That facility will be owned by an interest near-and-dear to your own checkbook-Williams Drilling. Then you sided with Drillers and voted 'no' to a short moratorium, in the face of a possible cancer cluster and screaming-loud citizens concern.

You want to call this "politics"! Councilmen Hayden and Filidoro are doing their homework and listening to the Citizens of Flower Mound. I would call that "Service"! Try it some time!

"I do respect the concerns of residents over the issue of urban drilling" I notice you didn't say 'SHARE the concerns'. Now THAT'S politics! Saying something that means nothing! Typical!

Wow, how bold you are, Jean!

You "urge" gas companies to refrain from requesting setback variances. You "encourage" them to inform us of their intent to develop wells in our community.

Awesome! Way to go to bat for your constituents! I'm sure Williams execs are busy right now discussing how they can fulfill your requests.

What a joke. Thank God your term on council is almost over. Go back to being a private citizen, and enjoy those monthly royalty checks you're getting from Williams. You worked hard for them!
